Ceilings can literally be a pain in the neck if you are not using a roller correctly.You should never roll a ceiling directly above you . The roller should be in front of you and you should be working away from the rolled area thus avoiding roller spray dropping onto you and saving your neck at the same time.

If you are in any doubt about priming , my answer would be don't think twice get the primer out and set yourself up for an A1 job.Maybe I am just old school when it comes to priming .
If it was left to me anything I paint would get primed first .If you are painting over any surface that has anything other then a flat finish it needs priming .
Priming forms a key for the finish paint to adhere to .We have all noticed shaby looking paintwork in our neighborhood .
This happens for 1 of 2 reasons or a combination of both , leaving it to long before a repaint is necessary and no priming before applying a finish coat.
If your budget only allows for 2 coats make that a primer coat and a finish coat .Have the primer mixed if possible has close to the finish coat has possible and there should be no problem getting the finish coat to cover.
Whatever they tell you at the paint stores , primer is not just for priming new wood, drywall or blocking out stains , it will get your finish paint to stick and give your paintwork longevity.
